Exfoliation gives faster visible results than almost anything else, which is exactly why it gets overdone. Most skin needs it once or twice a week, not daily.
Acids
AHAs such as glycolic acid loosen the bonds between surface cells. They suit dullness, rough texture and uneven tone, and they are the most likely to be overused.
Enzymes
Gentler and more forgiving, working only on surface debris. A better starting point for sensitive skin.
Physical
Immediate smoothness, but the easiest to overdo. Light pressure, and never on inflamed skin.
How to tell you have gone too far
Tightness, shine without hydration, stinging from products that used to be fine, or new sensitivity. Stop for a fortnight and rebuild with something simple.
