Retinol is the most studied active in skincare, and the one most often abandoned in week two. Almost always for the same reason: the strength was too high, too soon.
Start lower than you think
A lower concentration used consistently will take you further than a high one used twice and shelved. Most people should begin two or three evenings a week and build from there.
We stock retinol across a range of strengths, so stepping up is a matter of moving along the shelf rather than starting again:
- Retinol Skin Brightener 0.25% — for a first bottle, or for skin that reacts easily
- Retinol Skin Brightener 0.5% — a natural second step
- Retinol Skin Brightener 1% — for established users
- Myriade The C-Retinol — retinol paired with vitamin C, a gentler entry
What to expect early on
Dryness, flaking and a little tightness are common in the first few weeks while skin adjusts. That settles. Redness that stings, or that lasts, is a sign to reduce frequency rather than push through.
Two things that make it easier
A supportive moisturiser on the nights you use retinol, and daily sun protection on the mornings after. Both make a real difference to how comfortable the process is.
